Autumn has arrived. Summer, with its brightness, sunshine, flowers, birds, T-shirts and picnics, has said goodbye for now. The days are growing shorter, the temperatures are dropping and the wind has a sharper edge.

Many people feel a sense of sadness when summer comes to an end. It feels like a turning point, as though something is ending and the darkness is closing in. “Nothing gold can stay,” wrote American poet Robert Frost, and it is easy to become melancholy and feel like hibernating.

When everything begins again

But others look forward to autumn with anticipation and excitement, because this is also when everything begins:

  • Now that the sheep round-ups are over, the harvest is safely gathered, school has started and autumn projects are under way
  • Now that the mountains are streaked with white and the landscape has settled into its restful autumn colours
  • Now that routine has taken over and, although we are secretly a little relieved, we immediately start dreaming of freedom in the outdoors again
  • Now that the weather is becoming a little more bracing and we may feel like simply curling up on the sofa under a blanket

Winter, snow and outdoor adventures are just around the corner.

The weather is a state of mind

So now is the time to start thinking about winter and getting outdoors. In Iceland, we are fortunate enough to be able to rely on cold and windy conditions for much of the year when we head outside to play—whether that means biting winds and sleet, the magnificent spectacle of a raging snowstorm, or crisp, bright and dry frosty days. Here, we simply have to embrace the idea that the weather is a state of mind—and dress accordingly.

As it turns out, spending time outdoors in the cold is incredibly good for us. We strengthen our immune systems, reduce stress, improve our mood and build stamina—all while making the most of the daylight and its positive effects on both body and mind. Not to mention the sheer pleasure of being outside, breathing fresh air and laughing in good company. Or coming indoors after a wonderful day outside, enjoying a hot drink by candlelight and exchanging stories.

At Sóti, we love being outdoors—and we love winter just as much. We offer all kinds of winter activities: skiing adventures for beginners and more experienced skiers, snowshoeing tours and blissful flotation sessions in the warm waters of Barðslaug. In the evenings, Sóti Lodge welcomes guests with wonderful food, warm hospitality, and the peace and quiet that restore both body and mind on dark winter nights.

Allow yourself to enjoy winter with us.
