Join us for the classic hiking tour from Siglufjörður to Fljót!
This is a historical trail with epic views towards the Arctic horizon.
We gather at the Sóti Summits office at Aðalgata in Siglufjörður for a briefing and to organise rides, before heading off to our starting point at the Skarðsdalur ski resort.
During the summer, an old road slithers down the mountainside from a pass through the Siglufjarðarskarð pass, opened in 1946. It was the first road connection to Siglufjörður, only open in summer, and provided the only road connection until the the opening of the tunnel Strákagöng in 1967.
We head up the ski resort, following the old road to the pass. As we cross through it, we are welcomed by a spectacular view towards the Arctic circle and a closer vies towards our destination at Hraun. We follow the old postal route down the valley, stopping now and then to read the beautiful landscapes, detect plants and have a conversation with the local sheep.
As we arrive at the coastline at Hraun, we spend some time examining the old turf shelter used by our brave shark fishermen in the 19th century and try to imagine how life was for them, while we arrange for the pick up of cars and people.
